Maria Kolesnikova, a Belarussian opposition activist, has been awarded the Council of Europe's renowned Vaclav Havel Prize. Tatyana Khomich, the imprisoned Kolesnikova's sister, accepted the prize and stated that her sister would likely dedicate it to the Belarusian people. Every day, millions of Belarusians battled to create their future and be free.

In addition to Kolesnikowa, this year's Vaclav Havel Prize nominees include the group Reporters Without Borders and Burundian human rights campaigner Germain Rukuki.
