Fair taxes are a priority for the European Parliament. Tax policy and the fight against tax fraud has become a burning issue in the last decade due to repeated illegal capital outflows and tax havens. Unpaid taxes burden the budget at both the national and European level.
Although fiscal policy remains the responsibility of the Member States, the fight against tax fraud is a shared responsibility of the Member States and the EU. As of September 2020, the European Parliament has supported the work of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (ECON) in the field of taxation and focuses on combating tax fraud and tax evasion, as well as enhancing tax transparency.
