The SUV flagship, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, has just been unveiled. The new edition is the fifth generation of the model since its birth in 1992. In the meantime, more than 7 million have been sold, and it has become the most award-winning SUV in the world. The new edition features a range of news in all areas, which gives reason to believe that the Grand Cherokee has not received its final award yet.
The exterior design is unique, as is the cabin and architecture in general—and then it comes with a new driveline in the form of the Grand Cherokee 4xe, which is a plug-in hybrid. Although there is a lot of news, it sticks to its core values such as high comfort, space, practicality, and, not least, good 4x4 properties in the terrain—not least thanks to the 4x4 systems Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive I, as well as Quadra air suspension and Selec-Terrain.
The latter allows you to choose the right driving program based on the surface and terrain. This changes the traction distribution between the wheels, steering, suspension, accelerator and brake response, gearshifts, traction control, and ABS. Selec-Terrain comes with five different settings-Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, Mud, and Sand.
Thanks to the air suspension, the new Grand Cherokee has a ground clearance of up to 28.7 cm and can pass water at a depth of 61 cm.
The new architecture provides a car with improved performance, safety, and reliability, while weight, cabin noise, and vibration are reduced. At the same time, it has become more spacious, although the roofline has been lowered a bit.
The architecture has also made it possible to electrify the Grand Cherokee and turn it into a plug-in hybrid. The Grand Cherokee 4xe combines an electric motor and a 400-volt 400.2 kWh battery with a 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine fitted with 8-speed automatic transmission. The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe provides 375 hp and a full 637 Nm. The Jeep's battery is located under the floor and does not take up space in the cabin. All electrical parts are well protected and sealed, and the battery has its heating and cooling system, which ensures that the operating temperature is optimal regardless of the weather.
The charging socket is located at the front, so parking and charging at public charging stations is easy. It comes with three different hybrid modes (Hybrid, Electric, and eSave), and if you choose Electric, the petrol engine is disconnected. Only the electric motor pulls the car until the battery runs out of power or full torque is needed. The expected range of pure electricity is about 40 km.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe also comes with regenerative braking, which regains energy for the battery when braking. In addition to the 4xe, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is also produced with a V6 engine with 293 hp and a 5.7-liter V8 with 357 hp.
On the outside, the new Grand Cherokee has been given a more modern and updated look. The new roof provides better aerodynamics without compromising on the cabin's spaciousness, and the new windows let more light into the car and, at the same time, provide a better view. In addition, the new Grand Cherokee has a broader radiator grille with seven stripes and a longer wheelbase.
Driving comfort is further enhanced with the state-of-the-art infotainment system, Uconnect 5, featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless. In addition, there is the option of a wide range of solutions and features such as a digital rearview mirror, a 10-inch head-up display in the windscreen in full color, wireless charging of smartphones, and a McIntosh sound system with 19 speakers.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee with an internal combustion engine and the Grand Cherokee 4xe is available in the Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trim levels. Trailhawk is the edition with the most robust 4x4 performance, and the 4x4 Trailhawk has completed the legendary Rubicon Trail in the USA on pure electricity.
